Why Curtain Wall?

The aesthetic beauty of a curtain wall is surpassed only by its functionality. This outer skin is designed to protect buildings from Mother Nature, and all she can throw at it – whether that’s sunlight, wind, rain or even earthquakes. It’s a critical piece of the building construction puzzle, but today’s curtain wall systems are inefficient to build, difficult to maintain and prone to costly failures. Water penetration, sway from wind and seismic forces, and the wall’s own dead-load weight make curtain walls a problematic building material throughout their entire lifecycle. Fortunately, a host of new technologies pioneered by Modern Wall Systems will revolutionize the way Building Owners, Architects and General Contractors look at curtain walls. It offers superior performance as well as flexibility in both design and construction not seen in today’s standard curtain wall technology.

 

Systems & Components Overview

Thermally Broken

Modern Wall System’s Curtain Wall is a factory glazed unitized system that is ordered in either a Captured (exposed frame) or Open-joint butt glazed panel (hidden frame) and can accommodate a variety of infill materials. Because they ship to the jobsite ready for installation, field labor is reduced to a minimum and site-applied water sealants are not required. The system uses the next generation of pressure equalized rain screen technology for fail-proof water tightness. Our thermally broken systems use reinforced polyamide thermal struts to provide the highest possible R-values. Because the system can be installed from inside the building, staging and heavy-lifting equipment may not be required.

Mullion Technology

The past generations of unitized Curtain Wall are notoriously unforgiving. They presented a number of challenges during installation that could only be overcome with increased field labor, which diminished the benefits of being a unitized system. And because they were designed to be as stiff as possible, they had difficulties remaining water tight under conditions such as floor slab deflection.

Modern Wall System’s unique mullion design effectively eliminates these problems.

Conversion Systems

Modern Wall’s mullion conversion technology, known simply as AdaptTech, transforms existing mullions into a Pressure Equalized-enabled system, capable of accepting Modern Wall System’s Unitized Panels. The process is fast, efficient, and green. It also allows for the most secure building possible during the renovation process. The best part is, TingWall can apply this technology to virtually any mullion shape. Contrasted with conventional systems, the benefits of this become immediately clear:

  • Significant time/labor savings
  • Significant liability savings
Full Systems

There are renovation projects that may be unsuitable for Mullion Conversion Technology. Common examples are those in which the mullions may not be structurally sound, those that may not have any mullions to convert, or simply the owner’s preference. In cases such as these, we recommend installing new mullions accompanied by Modern Wall panels. This is accomplished with one of two design options:

  • Utilize existing, in-place embeds
  • New Mullion Connection Anchor points

We combine Bottom Up with Top Down installation methods, best suited for projects with time constraints or difficult jobsite management conditions.
